Commercial safety netting provides passive fall arrest and debris containment protection at height on commercial building maintenance, repair, and glazing replacement projects. GLRE's safety netting installation service uses rope access deployment to install temporary and semi-permanent netting systems to BS EN 1263-1, BS EN 1263-2, and BS 8411 on occupied commercial buildings across the UK.
Safety netting on commercial buildings serves two broad purposes: personnel protection and debris containment. These are often required simultaneously on the same project, particularly where glazing replacement, cladding repair, or maintenance work is taking place above occupied areas, public footpaths, or active car parks.
Personnel safety nets are designed to arrest the fall of a worker who has lost footing or balance at height. They are an energy-absorbing system: the net deflects under load, slowing the fall and reducing the impact force transmitted to the worker. They are specified alongside or instead of scaffolded crash decks where temporary edge protection cannot be installed.
Debris containment nets are used to catch glass fragments, fixings, sealant residue, and other materials that may become dislodged during high-level work. On commercial glazing projects, debris netting beneath a working area prevents hazardous material from reaching ground level and allows the building to remain operational during works.
Safety netting is also used in atrium glazing projects to isolate the working zone from the occupied building below, and in commercial glazing demolition where the controlled removal of large glass panels carries an inherent risk of fragment release.
Safety netting installed on commercial projects in the UK must comply with the relevant British and European standards. These govern the specification, installation, and ongoing maintenance of netting systems.
BS EN 1263-1 sets out the material and construction requirements for safety nets, including mesh size, breaking strength, and labelling. All netting used by GLRE meets this standard and carries the required label showing the manufacturer, date of production, and relevant classification.
BS EN 1263-2 covers the safety requirements for the installation of safety nets, including anchor point loads, maximum fall distance, and net deflection limits. GLRE's rope access team are trained and assessed against this standard.
BS 8411 is the British Standard for the use of safety nets and provides guidance on rigging, inspection, maintenance, and de-rigging. FASET (the Fall Arrest Safety Equipment Training body) accreditation confirms that operatives have been assessed to this standard.

GLRE deploys safety netting via rope access rather than scaffolding on the majority of commercial projects. This approach offers significant practical advantages on occupied buildings: installation is completed in considerably less time than erecting scaffolded crash decks, at lower cost, and without requiring the building to close.
The installation process begins with a pre-installation survey to confirm anchor point loads, access routes, and the net configuration required for the specific hazard zone. GLRE's team includes qualified structural engineers where anchor point adequacy needs formal verification.
Rope access operatives establish working positions above the intended net zone using IRATA-approved techniques and equipment. Anchor points are rigged to the building structure using appropriate fixings, with load calculations confirmed before netting is deployed.
The netting is rigged to connect between anchor points with the specified catenary, ensuring the system will perform correctly if it enters service. Tie-back ropes, edge ropes, and coupling elements are installed and tensioned to the required specification. The completed installation is inspected by a competent person before the net is signed off and the work zone below is opened for use.
Netting can be deployed as a short-term measure for a single-day repair, or maintained as a semi-permanent installation for the duration of a larger programme. GLRE manages both scenarios. Where netting remains in place for extended periods, periodic inspection is required to check for UV degradation, mechanical damage, and continued anchor point integrity. Annual testing is included as standard on longer-duration installations.
Safety netting is typically the preferred access solution when a building cannot close, when the hazard zone does not lend itself to scaffolded access, or when the programme timescale is too short to justify the cost of erecting and striking a scaffold. On commercial glazing projects specifically, netting is commonly specified for atrium work, high-rise glazing replacement, curtain wall repair, and commercial glazing demolition where controlled glass removal at height is required.
Where personnel safety netting is specified alongside rope access glazing, a single mobilisation covers both the access and the fall protection elements, reducing cost and programme duration compared to subcontracting netting to a separate supplier.
